While at SHS, Dave Spangler showed a level of involvement that would become apparent again in his involvement with the SHS Alumni Association. In his student days, Dave was a member of the Dramatics Club and the stage crew, played football and ran track all four years, was a Scarlet S editor and a class executive committee member.
After graduating from SHS, Dave earned a bachelor’s degree in education at Ohio State University. He then returned to Shelby where he has been helping to educate and shape the community’s youngsters, teaching elementary school for 37 years. In that capacity, he has coached numerous “Odyssey of the Mind” teams. One earned a first place ranking in the state competition, thus qualifying for the national competition where it achieved a seventh place ranking. Another of Dave’s teams earned a second place ranking in the state competition.
Dave’s career accomplishments were recognized at the 2007 SHS Honors Assembly; the annual Shelby Educators Scholarship was presented to an SHS senior in Dave’s name.
In working with the Alumni Association, Dave has been a member of its planning team, its Board of Trustees and the Board’s Special Gifts Committee. He also has served as master of ceremonies at several Alumni Association events. In connection with the 2004 All-Alumni Weekend, Dave coordinated the development of a memorial service for deceased alumni and faculty and staff.
In addition, Dave has served as a coach in both the Shelby Little League and the Shelby Girls Softball League.
He has been a lifelong member of the First Lutheran Church where he has served on the church council.
He and his wife Linda Thurman Spangler ’69 live in Shelby.
