During his years at Shelby High School, Dick Reed played football and basketball and ran track. He was a three-year letter winner in football, was team co-captain, twice named All-Northern Ohio League as a halfback, and was part of two NOL title teams including the undefeated 1953 squad. Dick earned two letters in basketball and four in track. He also received the Outstanding Senior Athlete Award. In the words of a classmate, “Dick is the ultimate Shelby Whippet. He was and still is our 1954 class president.”
After graduating from SHS and completing two years of military service, including a year in Korea, Dick earned his bachelor’s degree from Ashland University and master’s degree from Bowling Green State University. He then returned to SHS in 1965, embarking on a career as a teacher and athletic director. For 26 years he taught in the Business Department. In 1991 he was named the school’s first full-time athletic director and served in that capacity until his retirement in 1996. In addition, he served as the junior varsity football coach for 12 years and assistant varsity football coach for seven years.
Dick is actively involved with his grandchildren’s activities and the Episcopal Church. He serves as president of the Shelby Senior Center Board of Trustees, is a member of both the Johnny Appleseed Wood Carvers Club and the Shelby Cloverleaf Square Dance Club of which he is past president.
He lives in Shelby with his wife, Judy Brinson Reed ’57. They have two children. Son Rick ’86 is an electrical engineer in Columbus and the father of Delaney. Daughter Tally DeLauder ’88 is an elementary teacher in the Shelby City Schools and is the mother of sons Reed and Brinson DeLauder.
