Since 1974 Curtis Fackler has led a life that combines service to country and community with entrepreneurship and business success.
While at SHS, he ran cross country and track and was a member of the Latin Club serving as an officer for two years. After graduating from SHS, Curt attended Ohio State University on a four-year ROTC Scholarship graduating with a degree in Marketing. He served eight years as an Air Force Officer, first as a Navigator on B-52 long-range bombers and then as a navigation instructor. While stationed in the west he earned an MBA in Finance from Golden Gate University.
After Air Force service he entered the Financial Services Industry and moved to Spokane Washington in 1990. Shortly thereafter he started Payroll Plus, a Human Resources firm that managed more than $100 million dollars in payroll for 100 business in 12 states. This firm set up many small businesses insurance and retirements plans. Curt sold Payroll Plus in 2001 and started a consultant firm that helped small businesses with their HR needs. In 2013 Curt approached Empire Health Foundation about a grant opportunity available in reference to the Affordable Care Act. Curt formed Better Health Together, a Not for profit, this organization enrolled over 100,000 people in 18 months in health insurance. This lowered Spokane County’s uninsured rate from over 15% to under 5%. This directly led to the reduction of Charity Care in Spokane County by local health care systems by over $100 million a year.
Curt has been a community leader serving Boy Scouts as a Scout Master, parent volunteer for schools, and a Treasurer for Boys & Girls Club of Spokane. He also served for 20 years on the Selective Service Board for the Department of Defense. In 2007 Curt was named the Small Business Champion of the Year by the National Federation of Independent Business of Washington State. He and his wife of 39 years served as Foster Parents and have two adoptive children. In 2018, they sold their home and now are full time RV’ers and volunteer at State Parks around the country. In 2019, from March 9 to September 9, Curt and Tammy completed a remarkable journey; they hiked the Appalachian Trail from Springer Mountain, Georgia to Mount Katahdin, Maine.
