Sandra Weaver Harewood ’69

Sandra Weaver Harewood

Caring, giving and Sandra Weaver Harewood ’69 are all synonymous.  If someone had been keeping a log of the people Sandra has helped, by now it might well be as thick as a city phone directory.  While at SHS Sandra was a member of Student Council, Concert Choir, the Choralettes, French Club, Drama Club, Pep Club, Tri-Hi-Y and Girls Athletic Association.  She also made time to be a cheerleader and represented SHS at Buckeye Girls State.

She holds especially fond memories of the late Wayne Potts: “I loved the sound of French and the added challenge of finding new concepts expressed in a different language.”  After graduating she earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology at The Ohio State University and then remained at OSU to earn her degree in medicine.

She began her physician’s career as a general internist and then moved to medical education, supervising the training of residents.  Sandra lost her husband to an early death, then returned to private practice in which she works as a hospitalist, enjoying “the more in-depth care.”  In addition she makes time to see patients at a long-term acute care center where she treats people needing at least a month for management of problems more intricate than can be addressed during a short-term admission.  “Through my glimpses into the lives of so many patients, my experience has been much broader than my own individual life.”

Adds an alum, “Sandy has mastered the art of selfless giving.”

She lives in Dayton.  She has three children:  David Harewood, Greer Harewood and Miriam Harewood Makola, MD.

Nominator:  Mike Johnson ‘63
